Desert Reef Poodles

They have arrived! Right on time too!
Ava had an easy time of it, thank you for all the good thoughts and positive vibes going her way.

So March 4th welcomed 9 puppies for Ava and Kolya!
4 males and 5 females....
It would appear that there are 3 silver boys, 1 'dark' boy, 4 'dark' females
and 1, yes ONE cream female!
Wonderful weights, active, vocal and eating right away.
Ava is doing very well and already loves her babies.

Just born!

Happy St Patrick's Day!

Owen's been waiting!

Where did the two weeks go?! What fabulous babies, and what a terrific mommy they have!  Ava has been the best mother, not needing any help from Amelia.  (Who is sooo wanting to wipe bottoms, crazy girl!)
The puppies are growing bigger and stronger, I'm very pleased with their progress.  The largest pup, a male, came into this world at 14 oz, and two weeks later, he weighed in at 3 lbs!
They've had their nails trimmed twice already... all that protein!

Ava is eating everything that is put down for her, raw... so that means every hour I am serving another dish.  :)
She has a very varied diet of chicken, turkey, lamb, rabbit, beef and at the moment is chewing on a llama bone.  In between meals she is in the box feeding her pups and still sleeps with them all night, providing plenty of warmth.

Their eyes opened right on time, as well as their little ears. What changes that brings about. Getting up and trying to walk, seeing their siblings and 'trying' to play, mouthing each other. It's entertaining to watch them put all their effort into clobbering another, only to fall down themselves.  They are finding their voices well. In fact today the dogs were barking at the door and someone in the living room let out some very hearty woofs!  I'll have to take note of who that is, perhaps we have the beginings of a great watch dog!  :)

The puppies have left their peaceful back room, as they needed more room to stretch out and move. (As well as Ava)  So now they are in the front room... living area. Besides hearing sounds of television and activities, AJ and Amelia are in and out of the room - checking on them too.  AJ loves to lay next to their box and watch them, and when I take one out, he places kisses on their faces.
Amelia is only intersted in making sure they potty... once a mother, always a mother! LOL!
They've had some visitors, who are more than happy to hold and snuggle them... and now that their eyes are opened, Owen is allowed to also.  But only with supervision!  They'll soon be used to a kid zooming around the house, making the oddest  sounds.

And so the fun begins!

Life is sure getting exciting, now that we are 4 weeks old!  Fresh air, sunshine... prickly grass...
and oh yes... rough rocks!  Oh my, what a world!

1st time outside!

And now with Owen outside!  They sure do love him and he them!

Pups with Owen

This was only their 2nd time getting the formula... the first time needing my help.
I think they did rather well-

Going into their 5th week has brought lots of new things... goat milk formula (they find yummy), ground organic turkey and working their tiny teeth (and strengthening jaws) on chicken wings.
They are also enjoying visitors... that is always fun!
Their first time outside was as expected, but none seemed really bothered by it.  Most now are quite confident about the new environment. I'll start adding things to the yard to give them more experiences and of course Owen will be active outside with them soon too.

They are wonderful puppies...  a very content bunch, as their mother is doing a great job raising them. (They let me sleep too!)  It's hard to believe they've grown this quickly.
'Time flies when you are having fun!'  So true!

Later in the afternoon, the boys had their turn.  With the help of my friend, Penny (who has Angelee) the boys had a fun time.  All are getting more comfortable being outdoors and starting to explore a bit.
We also discovered who has a bit of drive.  :)
I believe it's quite obvious they LOVE people and attention!

Easter Eggs!

Wow, 5 weeks old and are they showing some very cute personalities.
I'm loving how they are moving about the yard now - much more secure, investigating odd things, moving across the rocks as though it's no big deal... and having the room to actually run!  Those little legs can move!  Today they heard some scary sounds, like my neighbor's band saw, the trash truck and a group of teenagers passing along the side gate this evening.  Some followed me out to see these 'strangers', sat and listened to me visit with them.  I was so impressed (and proud!)

Many of the pups enjoy following Owen about, but he's got to move faster now.  Those tiny teeth are sharp and their jaws are getting stronger.  No matter, he is having fun with the puppies, and tells his mother that that his dog should have puppies too.  :)

They are still getting the goat formula, a couple times a week, with yogurt... chicken wings are still a hit, but they've not gotten into the bone yet.  Today they had small turkey necks to 'play' with.
Their ground meats have been turkey and chicken, to include some liver... but tomorrow they'll be trying out Nature's Advantage's Beef formula.  Yummy, some green tripe is in there!  So far everyone is enthusiastic to eat, just some are satisfied more quickly.

They continue to meet new people...a special 'thank you' to the visitors who have helped socialize the puppies with me.  It's so great for them to see and meet kids to adults, men and women.

It's their last week in the living room but I think they'll make the transition pretty well.  They have already been walking around my kitchen, as I try to encourage them to come into the house on their own, going through the door way.  Hey, they are clearing the tall step to get in too!  There are still a couple that have to make more effort but they all can do it now.  Yes, they are getting so big!

Oh, they had their first bath... pictures to come.  Fluffy little buggers now.

What lucky puppies... ???  LOL!
Owen came over and spent the night, so they got to play with him before going down for the night, and first thing this morning... bedtime story and all!

Obviously they adjusted fine.  Took about 10 minutes... but what helped is finding out that from this new home they are able to walk right out the door on their own!  They love going outside!
(And they do love their new 'digs')

6 weeks today!

Genetic information for Kolya  and Ava

The COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding) is calculated up to a maximum of 12 generations. However, if a generation is found where fewer than 75% of the dogs in that generation are known, the calculation stops just short of that generation. So if all dogs are known in the 5th generation but only half of them are known in the 6th generation, a 5-generation COI will be calculated. For dogs with more than 10 generations of pedigree information available, a 10-generation COI is also calculated for comparison and statistical purposes.

The COI is calculated entirely from the pedigree information present in the database, so if there are inaccuracies in the pedigree, there will also be inaccuracies in the COI. I try to run the COI every Friday. If there is an error on Friday that means I will have to correct the error and rerun the coi on Saturday. For information on what the COI figure means, see http://www.canine-genetics.com/relation.htm, particularly where it discusses the inbreeding coefficient. For a more complete discussion of genetic principles, visit the Canine Diversity Project.

10-generation COI 4.13%
12-generation COI 6.01%

Top 5 ancestors contributing to COI, in order of influence:

AM CAN CH Lemerle Travellin' Lite 1.08%
